Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difficulty level of Annapurna Trek compared to Everest Base Camp?

The Annapurna Base Camp trek is considered easier than Everest Base Camp, making it an excellent introduction to trekking in the Himalayas. While both are physically demanding, the key difference lies in altitude.

ABC reaches 4,130m, whereas EBC climbs to 5,364m, where thinner air significantly increases fatigue and the risk of altitude sickness. This makes ABC a more forgiving and accessible option, especially for fit first-time trekkers looking to experience high-altitude adventure without the added strain of extreme elevation.

In addition, the ABC trek is shorter in duration, typically requiring 7 days trekking days compared to 12–14 days on the EBC route. The terrain on ABC is more varied, passing through lush forests, terraced fields, and traditional villages, with steeper ascents and descents that feel dynamic but less prolonged. In contrast, EBC is a longer endurance challenge with more sustained trekking at high altitude over rugged, glacial terrain.

Overall, ABC offers a high-reward Himalayan experience with less physical and mental strain, while EBC is a more demanding, expedition-style journey suited to those with greater trekking experience and endurance.

How fit should I be to join the trip?

You don’t need to be a hardcore trekker or an athlete, that’s for sure. If you’re already an avid trekker, this should not be much of a challenge for you. ABC is a high altitude trek that requires only walking with no technical climbing.

The adventure calls for 7 days with approximately 5-6hrs of walking a day. The fitter you are, the higher your chances of success. It is fair to say that before you take the ABC challenge, you are able to walk comfortably for 3-4hrs a day. Even for a first-timer, this trek is achievable if you make proper preparation prior to departure.

To make your life easier, we are offering a complimentary mountain climbing training plan to all our clients, designed by Ryan Mex.

What about training and preparation before the climb?

Whether you are an experienced trekker or a novice traveler, you must train well before heading to ABC. Since you’ll be walking through rough and rocky trails for 7 days, it is advisable to engage in cardio activities at least 2 months prior to the trek. Prepare yourself and maintain your physical fitness with activities like swimming, hiking, cycling, and running.

To make your life easier, we are offering a complimentary mountain climbing training plan to all our clients, designed by Ryan Mex.

Acclimatisation: do we need oxygen or altitude pills?

No oxygen needed, and altitude pills are not mandatory. As a rule of thumb when climbing at high altitude, acclimatization and gradual climbing are the golden rules. This minimizes the risk of altitude sickness and improves your chance of summiting.

Our experienced guides will be equipped with common altitude medications such as Diamox, should the need arise.

What’s the risk of altitude sickness (AMS)?

The risk of AMS differs from person to person. Since you’ll be walking above 4000m, the risk factor will be present. However, our ABC itinerary is thoughtfully designed with proper acclimatization days to reduce the chances of altitude sickness.

In addition to that, all our guides are certified first-aid responders who will effectively monitor you and help you, if any symptoms arise.

It is recommended to trek at a slow and steady pace, instead of rushing to reach your destination. Most importantly, stay hydrated and drink as many fluids as possible to reduce the risk of AMS.

Will it be the right season for ABC?

Early December (1–10 Dec) is actually a very good time to do the Annapurna Base Camp trek.

You can expect clear skies, excellent mountain visibility, and crisp air, meaning the views of the Annapurna range are often at their absolute best. Trails are also much quieter compared to October–November, giving your trek a more remote, authentic feel.

Is it possible to arrive earlier / stay longer?

Yes, ofcourse. As long as you are in Kathmandu on the trip dates, you are free to arrive / leave whenever you want. It is best to let us know your plans so we can organize transfers accordingly.

What type of insurance do I need?

Every trekker is required to make a travel insurance package which covers trekking up to 4000m, including helicopter rescue. This is an absolute must for any of our trekking tours.

What kind of accommodation is available during ABC?

During the trek, you will be spending your nights at the local tea houses that offer the best facilities available. You will be accommodated in deluxe quality teahouses in every overnight stop. We strive to select the cleanest, coziest and most comfortable tea houses available, however it is worth noting that rooms are not luxurious like the hotels around the city area.

How about food and water during ABC?

You will have full board meals throughout the whole duration of the trek. Our accommodations serve both Nepali as well as western cuisines, including but not limited to pizza, burgers, vegetables, fresh fruit, pasta, salads and grains. For every meal you can select any item from the menu, including one hot drink per meal.

Safe drinking water is provided for everyone. The tea houses on the trail provide safe drinking water. But, we do not recommend you to drink the water from local streams or natural sources. Make sure to carry a water bottle and ask your guide to fill the water in the teahouse. Also, it is better to carry water purifiers and tablets to treat the water for extra safety. You can also buy bottled water at all stages along the way.

Will it be cold?

As we climb higher and higher, yes it gets very cold. The climb takes us from tropical climates to alpine climates, with varying temperatures between +25C and -10C. Refer to our recommended Climbing and Equipment Gear list.

What vaccinations do I need?

As per WHO suggestions, make sure you are up-to-date on all routine vaccines such as flu, tetanus, chickenpox and measles. All eligible travellers should be up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines. It is recommended to have all shots of Hep A & Hep B, rabies and typhoid.

What's the power plug in Nepal? Is there electricity in the tea houses?

In Nepal the power plug sockets are of type C. Type C is the normal ‘2 round pins’,  also known as the standard “Euro” plug.

Yes, most teahouses in the Everest region have electricity and do provide charging facilities. However, since they are solar-powered, the charging stations are available only for small electronic devices, such as mobile phones, portable chargers, cameras, and battery packs.

Bear in mind that sometimes charging facilities come at an additional cost, depending on the teahouse. It ranges from 1-5euros, increasing as you go higher during the trek.

During trekking, it is recommended to bring power bank to charge your devices.
