Frequently Asked Questions

What is the dress code when visiting monasteries?

While visiting the monasteries, temples and other religious sites in Tibet & Bhutan, you should dress modestly. Wear attire that covers your shoulder, knee, and don’t expose your body in lubricious way. As a woman if you are wearing dress make sure it is longer than your knee.

How fit should I be to join the trip?

You don’t need to be a hardcore trekker or an athlete, that’s for sure.

It is important to note that there is a lot of walking and a high- altitude trek on this trip. Please ensure you are in decent physical condition and able to walk for extended periods of time.

It is fair to say that before you take the Kailash Kora 3-day trek, you are able to walk comfortable for 3-4hrs a day.

Will it be the right season for this trip?

Mid- March to mid- May (Spring season) is the best time. Most festivals occur during this season, so you might get a chance to witness one of the Bhutan’s or Tibet’s popular festivals. Therefore, spring is perhaps the best time to visit!

Moreover, the wildlife and flowers are at their most vivid. In addition, the magnificent rhododendrons, magnolias and other wildflowers can be seen blooming. The birdlife is surprisingly abundant as well.

What kind of accommodation is available?

In Kathmandu, we will stay in Lo Mustang, a 4* Hotel in the centre of the tourist district. For the rest of the trip, 3* Hotels/Lodges and guest houses are used. These can vary in terms of service and efficiency, but offer quaint, local charm and flavour. In some instances they might not be like what you are used to back home.

Accommodation in Tibet is generally located in rural areas or outside town centres – they are traditional in architecture, style and its services to the guest.

On the Mt Kailash trek, accommodation is very basic due to the remoteness of this place. Travellers should be prepared for basic accommodation which ranges from pilgrim bodges, basic dormitory style accommodations, and guesthouses run by monks with no heating. Wifi and water can often be sporadic and in some locations especially in the mountains.

What meals are included?

All breakfasts, all meals during the Mt. Kailash trek, all meals in Bhutan,  together with 2 dinners in Nepal are included in the cost of the trip – some are in the accommodation where it is the best quality/availability option.

In Bhutan, most meals are served buffet-style with a selection of traditional Bhutanese food, some western-style as well as some Chinese. Fresh local vegetables are in abundance and while Bhutan is almost mostly vegetarian, there usually is one meat dish available (on some occasions, there can be shortages, as all meat is imported from India).

What type of insurance do I need?

Every climber is required to make a travel insurance package which covers high altitude trekking up to 5000m. This is an absolute must for any trekking trip.

What travel vaccines are needed?

As per WHO suggestions, it is recommended to have shots of yellow fever, Hep A & Hep B, rabies and typhoid.

It is recommended to call the Floriana Immunisation centre for more specific details on 21231231.

Is it possible to arrive earlier / stay longer?

Yes, of course. As long as you are in Chengdu on the trip dates, you are free to arrive / leave whenever you want. It is best to let us know your plans so we can organise transfers accordingly.

Visas and Entry Requirements

All countries require a valid passport (with a minimum 6 months validity). For Nepal, the Multi-Entry Visa will be done on arrival at Kathmandu International airport and costs $50, paid in cash on arrival.

For Tibet and Bhutan, MexVentures will arrange the visa for you. The cost of the visa is included in the tour price. No passport photos are currently required for this, but it’s always good to travel with a couple current photos.

Will it be cold?

As we climb higher in altitude, yes it gets very cold. The trip takes us from tropical climates to alpine climates, with varying temperatures between +25C and -10C.

The prime requirement for clothes you bring on this trip is that they are comfortable and appropriate to the weather conditions that you are likely to meet. For protection against cold, particularly at night, a number of relatively thin layers is better than a few thick ones. Thermal underclothes, being small and light, can be very useful. Tibet and Bhutan are very conservative and you should dress accordingly. As a general guideline, shoulders and knees should be covered at all times. The wearing of shorts is not allowed as it will restrict your entry into buildings of a religious nature and family homes. A waterproof and windproof jacket, a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen are essential.

During the Mt. Kailash Trek, nights get very cold! Very warm clothes must be worn.

What’s the risk of altitude sickness (AMS)?

The risk of AMS differs from person to person. Since you’ll be commuting at very high altitudes, the risk factor will be present. However, our itinerary is thoughtfully designed with proper acclimatization to reduce the chances of altitude sickness.

In addition to that, all our guides are certified first-aid responders who will effectively monitor you and help you, if any symptoms arise.
