16 Days in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan

Day 1 - 26th AugustArrival in Almaty

For those travelling from Malta we will meet at Malta International Airport and travel together to Almaty, Kazakhstan. If anyone is flying from outside of Malta has to meet us in Almaty on the travel dates.

  • Arrive at Almaty International Airport at approx 8.20am. Meet your guide and transfer to the city. Early check-in and freshen up.
  • Do an Almaty City Tour, which begins at Republic Square and the Monument of Independence. Learn about Kazakhstan’s history and culture.
  • Visit 28 Panfilov Heroes Park, see the Orthodox Cathedral, built from wood and without even one nail by the popular architect Andrey Zenkov.
  • Visit the Green Bazaar and the Chocolate Factory.
  • Head to Kok Tobe Hill for panoramic views of Almaty and a walk near the tallest TV tower in Kazakhstan.
  • After a day of exploration, return to your accommodation to unwind. Choose to join the group for dinner or enjoy the evening at your leisure.

Day 2 - 27th AugustAlmaty - Huns Ethno Village

  • Enjoy breakfast at the Hotel.
  • Drive to “Huns” Ethno Village, located 40 km from Almaty. The base is considered the first ethnographic “aul” (Kazakh traditional village) in Kazakhstan.
  • Here you can completely immerse yourself into the history of Kazakh nomadic people and watch a demonstration on how bauyrsaks (traditional bread) are made.
  • Here you can also learn more about national traditions, do horseback riding and archery.
  • Experience Kazakh lifestyle in an authentic village setting.
  • Lunch in the ethno-village, followed by time to explore local crafts and traditions.
  • At around 3-4pm you will return to Almaty for leisure time or dinner
  • Optional dinner with the group or you could do your own thing.

Day 3 - 28th AugustAlmaty - Ile Alatau Park - Turgen Canyon - Issyk Lake

  • Breakfast
  • Drive to Issyk town where the famous “Golden man” was found.
  • Pass through the town to Turgen canyon which is one of the most beautiful gorges of Ili-Alatau national park.
  • Walk to Bear Waterfall (40-50 minutes one way). Enjoy scenic views of fur and leaf-bearing trees, alpine meadows, and rushing streams.
  • For lunch, you will stop at a local supermarket to buy your own food and enjoy a small picnic in nature with the group or at one of the local cafes
  • Travel to Issyk Lake. Enjoy free time at this alpine lake surrounded by green water and mountain vistas.
  • Transfer back to Almaty for an overnight stay.
  • Optional dinner with the group or you could do your own thing.

Day 4 - 29th AugustAlmaty - Altyn Emel National Park - Bashi Village

  • Breakfast
  • Departure from hotel and transfer to the Altyn Emel National Park.
  • Arrive at Bashi Village by noon and check-in at the guest house and have lunch there.
  • Visit Singing Sand Dunes. Climb the dunes to witness stunning desert landscapes and listen to the natural “singing” sound of the sands.
  • Enroute you will stop at several points such as  Oshak Tas (fireplace) and Chokan Valikhanov spring.
  • Return to Bashi village for dinner and rest.

Day 5 - 30th AugustAltyn Emel State Reserve

  • Breakfast at the hotel
  • This day will also be spent exploring Altyn Emel – you will have time for stops, walking & meeting locals.
  • Explore the Aktau Mountains, famous for their colourful rock formations.
  • Discover the volcanic landscapes of the Katutau Mountains.
  • Return to the guesthouse for dinner.

Day 6 - 31th AugustAltyn Emel State Reserve - Charyn canyon - Saty village

  • Depart for Charyn Canyon.
  • Explore the Charyn National Park and the Charyn River Valley.
    • Walk along the canyon and admire the unique landscapes.
    • Visit the “Valley of Castles” (2 km long, up to 80 meters wide).
  • Travel to Saty village.
  • Arrive at Saty village and check into the hotel.
  • Enjoy dinner at the hotel and stay overnight.

Activity level: option to walk above the canyon – easy level & option to walk inside the canyon – moderate level.

Day 7 - 1st SeptemberSaty Village - Kolsai - Kaindy Lakes

  • Begin the day exploring the natural beauty of the region.
  • Spend half a day at the first Kolsai Lake.

  • Return to Saty village.
  • Drive to Kaindy Lake to see the unique sunken trees.
  • Dinner at the hotel in Saty village.
  • Rest and relax.

Activity level: Walking on this day in Kaindy is moderate with a bit of an uphill.

Day 8 - 2nd SeptemberSaty village - Kegen crossing point - Karkyra valley

  • Depart Saty village and travel to the Kegen border crossing.
  • Complete border formalities and enter Kyrgyzstan.
  • Continue the journey to Karkyra Valley.
  • Arrive and check into yurt glamping accommodations.
  • Enjoy free time exploring the local nature.
    • Options include hiking (easy or challenging), horse riding, and meeting local shepherds.
  • Lunch and dinner at the camp.
  • Overnight stay in the yurt glamping.

Day 9 - 3rd SeptemberKarkyra valley - Karakol town

  • Travel to Karakol town, with a stop at Tepke horse farm.
    • Enjoy lunch and a guided excursion around the farm.
    • View local racing horses, admire scenic views, and explore the bonfire area and gardens.
  • Continue the drive to Karakol town.
  • Visit Dungan Mosque, a functioning mosque built in the style of a Chinese pagoda.
  • Explore the Russian Orthodox Holy Trinity Church, constructed entirely of wood.
  • Transfer to Aksuu village to visit the hot springs (swimming is available and included for those who choose to do so).
  • Return to Karakol and check into a hotel for accommodation.

Day 10 - 4th SeptemberKarakol town - Altyn Arashan canyon - Karakol town

  • Transfer to Altyn Arashan Valley via special military vehicle.

    • Optional activities include horse riding and visiting hot springs (both available at an extra cost – approx 3 – 15 USD)
  • For lunch, you will stop at a local supermarket to buy your own food and enjoy a small picnic in nature with the group
  • Return to Karakol in the late afternoon.
  • Enjoy dinner with a local Dungan family.
    • Experience a unique blend of Kyrgyz and Chinese cuisine.

Day 11 - 5th SeptemberKarakol town - Djety Oguz, Barskoon and Skazka gorges - Bokonbaev village

  • After breakfast, drive to Djety Oguz Gorge.
  • Admire the scenic landscapes and take photos.
  • Visit the “Broken Heart Rock” and walk to the panorama to see the iconic Seven Bulls rocks.
  • Stop at the village of Svetlaya Polyana.
  • Meet a master craftsman who produces traditional Komuz musical instruments.
  • Engage in conversations with villagers and enjoy tea with local honey and homemade jam.
  • Have lunch in the village.
  • Continue to Barskoon Gorge for an excursion to its famous waterfalls:
    – “Beard of the Wiseman” and “Cup of Manas.”
  • Arrive in Bokonbaev village in the evening.
  • Enjoy dinner and rest at the accommodation.

Day 12 - 6th SeptemberBokonbaev village - Naryn town - Tash Rabat caravanserai

  • Depart in the morning for Naryn town.
    • Stop en route to meet an eagle hunter and witness a demonstration with birds of prey.
  • Continue to Kochkor village.
    • Enjoy lunch with a local family.
    • Visit a women’s cooperative to learn about the traditional process of producing felt carpets.
  • Transfer to Tash Rabat via Naryn town.
    • Arrive in the evening at Tash Rabat area and settle into the yurt camp.
    • Excursion to Tash Rabat Caravanserai, an 11th–14th-century stone structure.
  • Dinner and overnight stay at the yurt camp.

Day 13 - 7th SeptemberTash Rabat - Son Kul lake

  • Depart at around 8am in the morning for Naryn town (approx 1.5 hour drive).
    • Pass through the city and visit the main square and the unique Blue Mosque.
  • Lunch at a local restaurant 
  • Continue the journey to Son Kul via the scenic Moldo Ashu Pass.
  • Arrive at Son Kul and check into the yurt camp at approx 4pm.
  • Free time for optional activity or to hike around the area
  • Enjoy dinner and overnight stay at the camp.
  • Optional: Participate in horseback riding games near the camp (this is 220 USD per group – we will determine cost per person once the group is closed).

Day 14 - 8th SeptemberSon Kul lake - Chon Kemin valley

  • Depart in the morning at approx 8-8.30am from Son Kul and descend via the scenic “33 Parrots” Pass.
    • Stop at the bottom of the pass to visit a small waterfall.
    • Take a 15-minute hike (one way) to enjoy the beautiful surroundings.
    • Level of difficulty is medium – important to wear good hiking boots.
  • Continue driving to Kochkor village (arrival approx 2pm).
    • Stop for lunch in the village.
  • Proceed to Chon Kemin Valley.
    • Arrive and check into the guest house (approx 5-6pm).
  • Enjoy dinner and overnight stay at the guest house.

Day 15 - 9th SeptemberChon Kemin valley - Bishkek city

  • Spend the first part of the day in Chon Kemin.

    • Optional: Relax by the pool and swim (for extra charge- approx 15USD) or visit the local Bilimkana school to meet local kids.
  • Lunch at the guest house.
  • Drive to Bishkek city.
  • Arrive and check into the hotel.
  • Optional: Attend a folklore show during dinner (18 USD + 150 USD per group for the folklore shows –  we will determine cost per person once the group is closed).

Tips & Important things to know before travelling to Kazakstan and Kyrgyzstan

  • In rural and mountainous regions, internet and WiFi may be unreliable. However, it gives you the opportunity to disconnect and enjoy the beautiful nature.
  • Some drives will be be long on winding roads so be sure to carry motion sickness pills just in case
  • Delays could occur due to weather conditions (be it air, water or land transport)- so please be patient, we do not have control over mother nature but our partners in the visiting country will always find the best possible solution for you.
  • Our partners in Kazakstan and Kyrgyzstan have the authority to change the itinerary last minute in the case of any weather conditions. This is for your safety & wellbeing.
  • On Day 8, you will cross into Kyrgyzstan, so your SIM card purchased in Kazakhstan will no longer work. However, you will have Wi-Fi at the campsite on this day, as the first opportunity to buy a local SIM card will be on Day 9. This issue can be avoided by using an e-SIM

Do yurts have hot water and are toilets/showers shared or private?

Yes, the camps will have hot water. The toilets and showers are separate and sharing. Please note that this is part of the adventure and an opportunity to embrace a unique travel experience.

How much should I budget for lunches and dinners not included?

This is up to your personal food and drink choices. You could spend anything between 5-30USD for a meal.

Could I get a single yurt if I pay the single supplement?

Yurt availability is limited – single occupancy in yurts is only possible if available. 

Is it possible to arrive earlier / stay longer?

Yes, of course. As long as you are in Almaty on the trip dates, you are free to arrive / leave whenever you want. It is best to let us know your plans so we can organise transfers accordingly. 

What type of insurance do I need?

For safety, travel insurance is mandatory when travelling with us. You need to make sure that the country of visit is covered by your insurance and is important to keep a copy of your insurance policy handy.

What is the accommodation like?

Accommodation will be hand selected and can be viewed above. There will be a mix of 4*, 3*, guesthouses and yurt camps. 

I am a solo traveller - is this trip suitable for me? Could I get a single room?

The majority of guests joining our trips are solo travellers. Through meet-ups, events and our facebook community you will get to know the group before meeting at the airport to fly to Kazakstan and Kyrgyzstan. You could get a single room at an additional charge, however, meeting up with the group beforehand could give you the opportunity to meet someone and decide together to share a room. 

How about food?

Breakfasts and 10 lunches and 10 dinners are included. If you have any food intolerances or allergies, please let us know as soon as you complete your booking. This will help us ensure that we can accommodate your dietary needs effectively during your trip

Are there vegetarian options?

Generally all restaurants cater for your needs and we will have a local guide who will suggest appropriate dishes and restaurants. Best is to advice us on booking so that we could plan for this in advance.

What's the power plug in Kazakstan and Kyrgyzstan?

In Kazakstan and Kyrgyzstan the power plug sockets are of type C and F.

Do I need a visa to enter Kazakstan and Kyrgyzstan?

EU passport holders do not need a visa to visit Kazakstan and Kyrgyzstan as a tourist, provided they have a passport of usually six months’ validity and an onward or return ticket.

  • Our local partners and tour leader can adjust the itinerary at the last minute due to weather conditions. Changes will only be made with your safety and well-being in mind, and not for any other reason.
  • We will make every effort to pair you with a roommate for a twin room. However, if this is not possible, you will be responsible for covering the single supplement fee.
  • Tour timings and the order of activities are subject to change based on final flight schedules or unforeseen circumstances, such as the unavailability of certain activities. A final version of the itinerary will be provided in booklet form closer to the trip dates. We strive to provide equivalent alternatives to ensure the best experience for our travelers.
  • If you decide to switch from a shared room to a single room after booking, the single supplement option won't apply. We'll need to work out a new price for the single room based on each individual case.
  • It is the responsibility of the persons joining an experience to communicate any food intolerances/allergy-related information. GTB or the Service Provider will not assume any liability for adverse reactions to food/drinks consumed, or items one may come in contact with while on an experience

  • Travel and Health insurance is obligatory: All travellers must be fully insured, and purchase their own travel insurance which covers the particular trip being booked. A waiver document must be filled in, signed and sent back to Globaltravelbook.
  • International flights are not included. You must book your own flights and be in the visiting country on the itinerary dates. Your flight must arrive by or before the Arrival Day, and depart no earlier then the Departure Day.
  • Signing up to any of our trips and any risks involved are the sole responsibility of the individual, and organizers cannot be held responsible in any way to illness, altitude sickness, injury or trauma during the trip.
  • If a traveller for some reason cannot travel on the dates, the organiser is not responsible.

Cancellation Policy

  • If you cancel your booking, we will offer a refund of any balance which we have not yet paid or are obliged to pay to any other Third Party. When a booking is cancelled within the month prior to departure, the remaining balance will be non refundable as well as we would be fully committed at that stage. All types of travel insurance are supposed to cover “cancellations” and for this reason we require that such travel insurance is purchased prior to travel.
