Frequently Asked Questions

How fit should I be to join the trip?

You don’t need to be a hardcore trekker or an athlete, that’s for sure. Mt. Kenya is an easy high altitude climb that requires only walking with no technical climbing. The adventure calls for 6 days with approximately 4-6hrs of walking a day. The fitter you are, the higher your chances of success. It is fair to say that before you take the Mt. Kenya challenge, you are able to walk comfortable for 3-4hrs a day.

To make your life easier, we are offering a complimentary mountain climbing training plan to all our clients, designed by Ryan Mex.

Will it be the right season for this trip?

January is a great time to climb Mount Kenya. Weather is stable because January falls in the dry season (January–February), offering clear skies, minimal rainfall, and good visibility—perfect for trekking and summit views.

Trail condirions are also very good, typically drier and less slippery, making the climb safer and more comfortable compared to the rainy seasons. Dry conditions improve your chances of reaching Point Lenana (the main trekking summit) safely and enjoying sunrise views.

January is also very good period for big cat sightsings, with grass shorter and prey more visible, lions, leopards, and cheetahs are often easier to see. The resident wildlife (the “Big Five” and many more) is always present year-round. January sees fewer tourists than peak months like July–October, making for a more relaxed safari experience.

What is the accommodation like on the mountain?

The Mt Kenya expedition sleeps either in mountain huts or under the stars in 2-men tents. The trip includes fully catered wild camping and sleeping equipment (Sleeping Bags + Tents) for the expedition, with some nights in rustic mountain cabins with simple beds. Tents are pitched by our team of climbing crew and porters, and disassembled also by the same team.

What meals are included?

All meals (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner) during the mountain expedition and during the safaris are included in the cost of the trip.

Full board meals are prepared for us by the climbing crew. Safe drinking water is provided for everyone.

What type of insurance do I need?

Every climber is required to make a travel insurance package which covers mountain climbing up to 5000m. This is an absolute must for any mountain expedition.

What travel vaccines are needed?

As per WHO suggestions, it is recommended to have shots of yellow fever, Hep A & Hep B, rabies and typhoid.

It is recommended to call the Floriana Immunisation centre for more specific details on 21231231.

Is it possible to arrive earlier / stay longer?

Yes, of course. As long as you are in Nairobi on the trip dates, you are free to arrive / leave whenever you want. It is best to let us know your plans so we can organise transfers accordingly.

Visas and Entry Requirements

All countries require a valid passport (with a minimum 6 months validity).

To enter Kenya, you must apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) before departure which costs approx 30-35eur.

Which route has the highest success rate?

The route we have chosen is considered the most scenic and with the highest success rates due to its acclimatization stages over 6 days.
